My Career shift

Crafting characters is like understanding user stories

In my previous role in the film industry, costumers work on all aspects of costume garment production. We handle high value assets, interpret design renderings, and keep intellectual property secure.

During the design process, we work off of concept sketches that are made into plain muslin prototypes. After many rounds of fittings with actors and presentation to directors and producers, the designs are approved and become produced in the final fabric with the carefully chosen trims.

We always take into account the emotions and actions along with technical function.

● Is the actor able to jump, squat and dive into the ocean with a wedding dress on?

● Was this dress a family heirloom?

● Did the character scream with excitement?

These are the questions to consider when understanding the users we design for. It’s about creating the story, and understanding how the story and characters can be shaped through each scene. This is my approach when designing for the user, with a deep understanding of their needs, goals, and challenges.

I embrace the use of props to ideate and have a knack for creating test environments
